Whisper Memos - Speech to text 4+

My first experiments with dictation software date back to 2007 … many experiments followed and disappointment was normal. When I started using Whisper on my Mac last year it felt like a revolution, a real quantum leap — I immediately started searching for an iPhone app to bring the revolution to my phone … et voilà … this is it! Big THANKS 🙏 to the team of developers!

Not good with poor quality audio - total junk In fact.

I’ve been looking for an iOS app that uses the open AI whisper algorithm, v2 large, at highest quality.

I’m wanting to create transcripts of audio for my elderly dad for when his age related hearing loss means he can’t make out what’s being said in reverberant situations.

I have tried the whisper algorithm which is remarkable. My test piece is a recording of a eulogy from a funeral in a reverberant church spoken in English which I made some while back on a phone. The full precision algorithm is word perfect so I had high hopes.

This app however is junk. It presented me with many paragraphs of I presume -
Welsh- literally. Not one word in English.
Sadly complete junk. Presumably the developer opted for a lower compute requirement instance of the algorithm with the result it doesn’t work in difficult situations. Ah well. “Delete”.

How do I know the free open sourced open ai algorithm is so good ? By using a different iOS app “whisper transcribe” which I would happily use but there are a couple of major bugs that stop it working most of the time that the developer isn’t addressing, but when it does process a recording - it is astonishing with near 100% transcription accuracy.

Hey Jonny! We can fix this.

We use the large model by calling OpenAI API directly.

The problem you saw was that language was left on "autodetect". Can you email us at [email protected] and we'll make sure it's switched to "english"?

It should work remarkably well when the language is selected.

Simple and reliable

There are a number of similar Whisper dictation apps but none are as focused as Whisper Memos. It doesn't try to do everything, just fast input when you need it most that gets to the app you need it to. I am massively impressed.
