Free but better than the paid apps
When I first bought my iPad, I decided to splurge a little and bought Notability. The fact that Notability did not have a quick tool switch/favourite tools in the toolbar was a huge turnoff convenience-wise. Additionally, the notes on my iPad sync automatically with my laptop. The significance of this is that I can draw on my iPad and then immediately proceed to type up a paragraph under the synced diagram using my laptop. It solves so many formatting issues. I’ve since been using OneNote and I appreciate the ease of usage and availability of the basic features. I have everything I need and to think that this is free. Definitely much more recommended than Notability (or even Goodnotes).
Not bad but not good
Used this app for a whole semester, and as a student, I can say that it is really not bad. The key advantages of Onenote is its sync ability across multiple devices, which allow me to access it on multiple devices. Moreover, its operational offline mode allows me to write my notes even without wifi. However, the app fails when it comes to certain aspects. Since it is based on an online server, if I copy the folder to a thumbdrive and delete it, I am unable to access my files again. Moreover, I can only export the documents by pages. Also, when I export these pages, I am unable to view it in the format I want (example grid lines) and if I were to go over the printable margins, the pdf will cut off those writings and place it in the next page instead. Hope that microsoft will work on these issues and I would like to thank them for their hard work.
Best note taking for cross platform. You will face whole chunk of bugs.
1. Like the title, there is barely any good replacement for cross platform note-taking apps.
2. pen accuracy is great.
3. OneDrive is quite affordable.
But,
1. backing up seems to have issue. Pdf inserts may disappear when you move to another section.
2. There are endless minor annoyances in the app (that just doesn't get solved.)
- tap undo and it will bring you to the last worked area, that might be minutes of scrolls away.
- tap on pen to select pen. Tap once to get nothing and twice to change pen setting. You just have to tap multiple times to change from one pen to another.
- palm recognition is odd. Any zoom status you hav set will be disrupted.
3. Table function is very limited. It can’t even merge cells.
I tried to get used to these bugs, used it for 5 years.
I’ve lost countless documents and work because the server back up has issues at the worst possible timing.
I hoped that these will be a rare occurrence. But today, I lost a whole section’s pdf with error icons tells nothing of the issue.
If you are looking for light note taking for cross platform, please go ahead. This is a great app.
But if you take a lot of notes with important documents, might want to rely less on this app.
I decided I will now look for alternatives to replace this app. I am sick and tired of losing my documents.
